In 2017, Elephant in the Room Productions presented Bizet’s Carmen in the flour shed of the Hart’s Mill complex in Port Adelaide. Using it’s themes of class divide and the awful effects of domestic violence, Elephant in the Room Productions partnered with the Zahra Foundation to use this production as a way to raise money to directly support women and children directly affected by this issue.
This production of Carmen featured Morgan Carter in the title role, Dione Baker as Michaela, Andrew Turner as Don Jose and Tristan Entwhistle as Escamillo. The setting of Carmen was updated from a cigarette factory in Seville to the docks of Port Adelaide in the 1920s with short English dialogue scenes connecting the musical numbers performed in their original French.
Carmen was directed by Ms Tessa Bremner, OAM, musically directed by Helen Loveday, and conducted by Gordon Hamilton, with sets by Ian Macdonald, and costumes by Sheila Moffatt
